Ebersole Sings Coward

No great pedagogical thought here. No secret of singing. Nothing but the superb voice of Christine Ebersole singing songs by the incomparable Noel Coward.

Ebersole is one of the singers I keep coming back too—funny how that is. Maybe it's the scales and exercises I hear students sing all day (yes, students sing scales and exercises in the studio to develop technique), but at the end of the day (or the start of this particular one) all I want to hear is something like Ebersole's voice: at once clear, true, heartfelt, uncomplicated and containing stillness. Yes, the latter could be the late hour at which I write, but I don't think so: beautiful voices makes us stop and listen, not only to the voice of the singer, but to ourselves. To me, that is the mark of a great singer: the ability to touch the listener with the voice.

Who does it for you?

Here are three cuts out of a whole album of Coward songs which you will find on Youtube; which, I have to say, doesn't have the finest quality of sound. And that is worrying. We aren't really getting the whole of anyone's voice on the platform. Be that as it may, I hope these songs allow you to find a space of quiet in our (now) mad, mad, mad, mad world—and I am not talking about the motion picture with Ethel Merman.

Wishing you all a good night.
